ODM DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT

Smart Glasses ODM Design & Development Services

When a catalog platform cannot carry your product, CYNRIN co-develops it. Our industrial designers, optical, acoustic, electronics and firmware engineers work from your product brief to a mass-produced smart glasses line — differentiated ID, custom PCBA and owned tooling, delivered through a gated NPI process.

  • Co-developed ID/CMF, electronics, optics, acoustics and firmware
  • Structured NPI: Concept → ID → EVT → DVT → PVT → MP
  • NRE quoted line by line; your IP, tooling and molds protected

WHAT ODM MEANS HERE

A development house and a factory under one roof

Original Design Manufacturing with CYNRIN is not a rebadged catalog unit. We jointly define the product, engineer its hardware and software, cut its tooling and transfer it into the same Shenzhen lines that build our reference SKUs. The result is a device your competitors cannot reorder from the same showroom.

The distinction from OEM manufacturing matters at procurement level: OEM places your brand on a proven, existing platform and starts at 1,000 units with little or no engineering cost. ODM starts from your specification — a new frame architecture, a camera or acoustic system the catalog does not offer, a specific battery target or a private firmware experience — and therefore carries non-recurring engineering (NRE), tooling investment and a structured Concept-to-MP development cycle. Most brand-flagship and category-defining programs are ODM; reorders and line extensions then run on OEM-style commercial terms.

WHAT WE CO-DEVELOP

Six disciplines, one integrated program team

01

Industrial design & CMF

Concept sketching, 3D surfacing and human-factor studies for weight, balance and fold geometry, plus color, material and finish specification from pantone-matched masters. CAD is issued DFM-ready, not handed over the wall.

02

Optical engineering

Lens geometry and tint programs, polarized, photochromic and prescription-insert architectures, camera window and boresight design, waveguide alignment and UV400/transmittance verification on our optical bench.

03

Acoustic engineering

Speaker chamber and leakage tuning, open-ear directivity, dual-MEMS beamforming and wind-noise strategy — validated with SPL curves and call-quality recordings against your use cases.

04

Electronics & PCBA

System architecture, schematic and PCB layout around Bluetooth SoC, camera MCU, PMU, sensors and battery protection; flex routing inside the hinge; EMC pre-scan before certification.

05

Firmware, app & cloud

Embedded firmware, voice-prompt and language packs, touch and gesture maps, OTA channel, branded app and pairing identity — with source and documentation terms agreed at contract.

06

Packaging system

Retail-box structure, dielines and insert design, accessory and cable kits, localized manuals and ISTA-style transit validation so the developed product survives the channel it is sold through.

THE NPI CYCLE

Concept to MP: every phase has a gate and a deliverable

Durations below are indicative for a ground-up platform. Derivatives that reuse an existing architecture and tooling family move materially faster; your program plan is issued with the NRE quotation.

W0–W3 · Concept

Brief, feasibility & specification

Product requirements document, reference tear-downs, architecture options, target BOM band and an IP/regulatory scan. Output: signed PRD and commercial framework.

W3–W8 · ID

Industrial design & DFM

ID renderings, CMF boards, mechanical CAD, early electronics stacking and DFM review. Output: frozen ID, tooling quote and EVT bill of materials.

W8–W16 · EVT

Engineering verification

Functional PCBA, 3D/CNC and soft-tool builds, optical and acoustic breadboards. Purpose: prove the design works. Output: EVT test report and design-change list.

W16–W24 · DVT

Design verification

Hard-tool parts, design-intent firmware, reliability and compliance pre-testing (RF, EMC, drop, thermal, sweat). Purpose: prove the design can be made. Output: DVT report and certification dossier.

W24–W30 · PVT

Production verification

Pilot run on production tooling and lines at takt rate, golden samples, AQL plan and operator training. Output: yield data, golden sample sign-off and MP release.

W30+ · MP

Mass production

Ramped production with SMT, assembly, aging and AQL gates, followed by steady-state reorders, OTA maintenance and continuous cost engineering.

Need a faster route? Catalog-based private label ships in 15–25 days; branded OEM typically runs 25–35 days in mass production.

IP & OWNERSHIP

Your project stays your project

  • Mutual NDA first — a mutual non-disclosure agreement is signed before briefs, CAD or target BOMs are shared, in English and governed by the contract terms you select.
  • Customer-paid tooling is customer property — molds and custom fixtures you fund are tagged, logged and stored exclusively; never used for another buyer, and returned or disposed of with photo evidence on request.
  • Your IP assigned to you — custom ID, mechanical design and firmware produced under the program are assigned per contract, with deliverables (CAD, Gerbers, build documentation) handed over at agreed milestones.
  • Our platform IP stays licensed — where a product builds on CYNRIN reference architecture, background IP is licensed for the product rather than transferred, with terms stated plainly in the agreement.
  • Controlled documentation — program files stay with the named team in the NPI data room.
NRE & TOOLING ECONOMICS

What you pay once, and how it is amortized

ODM programs separate non-recurring engineering — design, development, validation and certification work performed once — from recurring unit pricing. NRE is quoted line by line against the PRD rather than as a single opaque figure, and portions can be amortized into the unit price over a committed volume, lowering your upfront exposure. Indicative NRE for a full ground-up smart glasses platform typically falls in the low-to-mid six figures US dollars depending on electronics, optical and acoustic scope; derivatives on an existing architecture cost a fraction of that. Your exact schedule accompanies the quotation, never after a deposit.

YOUR INPUTS

A faster program starts with a usable brief

  • Product requirements document — target use case, must-have features (audio, camera, voice, sports), battery-life and weight targets.
  • Target cost and volumes — landed-cost band, first-year forecast and the channels the product must pass through.
  • Certification markets — regions of sale so CE, FCC, RoHS, REACH and battery-transport work is scoped from day one.
  • Brand assets — logo files, brand guidelines, pantone references and any mandatory packaging direction.
  • Decision calendar — launch or trade-show date, so the NPI plan is scheduled backward from a real deadline.

ODM FAQ

Development questions brand product teams ask

What exactly is the difference between ODM and OEM smart glasses manufacturing?
OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturing) builds your brand on CYNRIN’s existing, proven platform — logo, color, packaging and firmware identity are customized, but the architecture is ours. ODM (Original Design Manufacturing) co-develops a differentiated product to your specification: new industrial design, custom PCBA and electronics, optical or acoustic systems and firmware. OEM starts at 1,000 units with minimal NRE; ODM starts at roughly 3,000–5,000 units with quoted NRE and a multi-month Concept-to-MP cycle. The OEM page compares the two directly.
How long does a full smart glasses ODM project take?
A ground-up platform typically moves from kickoff to mass production in 4–9 months: Concept and ID about 6–8 weeks, EVT and DVT 12–16 weeks, PVT and ramp 6–8 weeks. Programs that reuse an existing architecture or tooling family are substantially faster. A dated phase plan is delivered with the NRE quote.
How is NRE charged, and can it be waived or amortized?
NRE is itemized — ID/mechanical, electronics spins, tooling, optical/acoustic tuning and certification — and quoted against the PRD before any deposit. Tooling is customer-owned and normally charged as a one-off; engineering NRE can often be partly amortized into unit pricing against a committed volume, rather than hidden in the unit price.
Who owns the tooling, molds and intellectual property?
Tooling and fixtures you pay for are your exclusive property, tagged and stored in our mold shop and never used for another customer. Custom ID, mechanical files and firmware are assigned to you per contract, with CAD, Gerbers and build documentation delivered at milestones. CYNRIN background platform IP remains ours and is licensed for the product; the boundary is defined before development starts.
Can you develop firmware and a branded app for our product?
Yes. Embedded firmware, voice prompts and language packs, gesture/touch behavior, OTA updates and a branded companion app with your pairing identity are all in scope, including private app-store listings. Ownership and source-code terms for custom firmware are agreed in the development agreement, while licensed components (for example third-party voice SDKs) are identified in the BOM.
What MOQ applies to a custom ODM program?
Custom ODM programs typically start at 3,000–5,000 units because custom PCBA, molded parts and packaging carry reel, tooling and supplier minimums. Catalog private label starts at 500 units and branded OEM at 1,000. The economics behind each threshold — and consolidation options for mixed SKUs — are explained on the MOQ page.
Which certifications and compliance marks can you deliver?
Programs are engineered and pre-tested for CE (EU), FCC (US), RoHS and REACH, with UN38.3 and MSDS support for lithium-battery shipment, under ISO 9001 quality management. Tests are run with accredited third-party laboratories in your brand name, and technical construction files are assembled for retail onboarding. See the certifications page for the current scope.
